Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Divorce

Q: I've heard Alaska does not have alimony, is that so?

A: Alaskan courts do not favor payments between ex-spouses that go on for years. But Alaska does have alimony although we use the terms “maintenance,” and “spousal support.” If possible to provide for a spouse through an unequal property division, see question above, the court will favor that option instead of monthly payments. But spousal support, often for months instead of years, is ordered with regularity in the Alaska courts.
