Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Divorce
Q: How much does a divorce cost?
A: The cost of a divorce differs as much as the cost of a new car. You can get a new-to-you car for $1,000, or a brand new dually pickup for $40,000. Unfortunately, when you buy a car, you are in control of the price. A divorce is the ultimate in lack of control. After an initial consultation, I will give you an educated estimate of how much your divorce will cost you, taking into account the value of the marital estate, whether there will be a custody dispute or not, and whether assets are difficult or easy to value, among other things. The simplest divorce may only be a few thousand dollars, but protracted litigation over children can cost over $30,000. I find the norm to be $5,000 – $20,000.
