Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Step-Parent Adoption

Q: Isn’t a step-parent adoption pretty simple? Can I do it myself?

A: You are always welcome to represent yourself. Oftentimes, the paperwork and notice and/or consent of the biological parent is daunting for a non-lawyer. You also must be ready to convince the judge that the biological parent’s consent is not needed, if it was not given. You may choose to prepare draft documents yourself, and then come in for a consult on an hourly basis to discuss the more legally complicated aspects of notice, consent, and legal abandonment.
